What UC is what you get

We're here in Santa Barbara both going to UCSB and living the married college life. Here you can read about nerd stuff, current protests at our school (or other strange liberal causes), and basically the haps of our UC life, and other parts of life as well!

As promised

So, it's Friday but it feels like Saturday. Billy only has summer school M-Th, so we get to sit around on Friday AND Saturday.
He usually does homework a lot. I have a test I need to take online for my class.

In other news, we just saw the Dark Knight last night at 12:01AM. It was pretty amazing. I liked it better than the first one. The first one was definitely a Bruce Wayne story, focusing on his life, his parents, his NINJA SKILLS, and then him becoming Batman. This movie was a movie about the Joker (mostly), and it also had a lot of good things to say about humanity in general. I had some weird dreams last night, too!
We haven't done anything all week except play old games at this website we found. www.nintendo8.com
I just ruined someone's life.
You can play all of your old Nintendo 8-bit favorites. I just beat Kirby's Adventure. I saved Dreamland, what have you done today?

Home sweet home

We're back from San Jose (we decided to go, in the end) and home again home again jiggity jig. It's smokey, but the fire has gotten a lot better because today the wind wasn't too strong so the firefighters were able to fight it pretty well.
It turns out it's about 3 miles away from our house, but it looks a lot closer because we could see it on the hills. We looked when the sun went down to see if we could see any orange glow. It looks like it has retreated on the other side of the hill, because we can't see much from our place. It's still smokey, though. Also, we missed some gas mask distribution they had yesterday. It was for people who can't avoid being outside in the smoke, they gave out free masks. I wish I got one, but I have a feeling they weren't cool ones (Are you my mummy?), but they were like those papery ones you use for gardening. Lame.
I think it won't be long until the fire is gone, so we probably don't have any cool pictures to post.

Oh also, our 4th of July wasn't too good, we went to San Jose, but we didn't see any fireworks!! It really isn't 4th of July for me if there isn't any fireworks, so 2008 seems pretty empty. Anyway, peace out.

Fire update

We left home for 4th of July to escape the smoke. We weren't going to go, then we were, then we weren't, then we went anyway. We drove up July 3rd at night, had 4th of July yesterday, and we still keep checking the news for the progress of the fire. It's worse, but not by too much! They've issued some more evacuation orders, but not to us. Here, let me show you:

The fire is probably a couple of miles from our house, but we were still affected by smoke, and it's a chaotic system, so it could come and burn up parts of the town. As far as I know, no houses have been destroyed, but the fire has come close to some. Also, today (Saturday) they are issuing free gas masks for people that need to be outside and can't avoid the smoke because the air quality is so bad.
So that's that, I'm glad we're not there, but I only wonder what we'll face when we have to go back home. More pictures and news to follow!

FIRE!

article about the Goleta fire
As of this morning this is the latest news, that the fire has grown! Great! Last night it was like...300 acres, and we watched it spread to 1900. Yeah. Right on our hills. Wanna see?

The fire station next to our house. The yellow is sky that's left, but then there's smoke all over the place.

A lot of these pictures are blurry, but you can see the fires. Our camera really sucks.

This picture was a mistake, because the stupid flash was on, but it reflected weirdly on the ash, so now you can see, we were breathing smoke.

These next two were taken this morning. It's really hard to see the fires, but they're still raging, and there's some smoke.

Because of all this, we're pretty anxious to get out of here, luckily Tim & Allison are going to SJ this weekend and offered to let us hitch a ride. Our power was out for a few hours last night in a very big power outage across most of SB county. I think it was caused by the fire, is what the article says. Anyway, fireworks are supposed to happen in the exact same place where I was taking the pictures (not on the hills, but in-between us and them) but I wonder if they will be canceled. In any case, the fire is getting worse, and it's hard to fight it because nor-cal (in Monterey) is on fire, too, so California is spread pretty thin. We're just happy to get out of here, especially if the power was still out. Luckily it went back on so I could blog, yay.
